Hiring Steps

THE SELECTION PROCESS - STEP 1

• The Application Screening Process is the first part of the selection process.
• The Application Packet can include the standard District Application as well as supplemental questionnaires, a cover letter and even a résumé. For information regarding how to request an application packet, see the 'How Do I Apply?' page.
• The Job Announcement describes exactly what is required for that particular job.
• You must follow the instructions on the Job Announcement, District Application and/or Supplemental Questionnaire carefully.

THE SELECTION PROCESS - STEP 2

• Human Resources will screen your application packet and the best qualified candidates will move forward to the next stage of the selection process.
• The District often gives job-related written or oral employment tests as well as interviews to determine which applicants have the best knowledge, skills and abilities for the job that is open.

THE SELECTION PROCESS - STEP 3

• All applicants who pass the various segments of the testing process are placed on an eligibility list. For most eligibility lists, your rank depends on how well you did on the testing process. A better overall test score means a higher ranking on the list.
• The top three ranks of eligible candidates are sent to the hiring department for a final interview. Some applicants may have received similar scores and are therefore included in the same rank. The supervisor notifies Human Resources of who he or she is recommending to hire.

THE SELECTION PROCESS - STEP 4

• Finalists are then processed by Human Resources. Reference checks are completed, any drug testing and medical exams are conducted and any criminal history information is obtained from the State Department of Justice.
• Offers of employment are contingent on passing these final checks.

THE FINAL STEP - HIRING

The goal of AC Transit is to hire the best qualified candidates. Although the employment process has many steps and can take some time, the end result is that the best qualified applicants are hired.
