Bay Bridge Closed; AC Transit Makes Contingency Plans

Tuesday evening, Caltrans closed the Bay Bridge in both directions after pieces of the cantilever section of the bridge fell during the late-afternoon commute. Officials are assessing the damage, and it is not immediately known how long the bridge will remain closed.

*Same Schedule with Detours to East Bart Stations

For the weekday commute, AC Transit will run regular service; however, buses will detour to four East Bay BART stations, as they did during the Labor Day bridge closure. The table below shows BART station assignments for each transbay line.

Paying Your Fare

Going into San Francisco, transbay passengers will pay a local AC Transit fare when they board the bus and then pay a separate BART fare to San Francisco. In the eastbound direction, passengers will pay the BART fare in San Francisco, but should get a BART-to-Bus transfer upon exiting their East Bay BART station in order to pay a reduced local AC Transit fare.

*Keep in mind, it may be more convenient to take local service to the nearest BART station instead of a transbay line to the detour station. We encourage passengers to use one of AC Transit's online trip-planning features at www.actransit.org, or check out the system map and schedule to determine the most direct route. AC Transit's Line 800 All Nighter service will operate on its regular schedule, but will go over the San Mateo Bridge, with the last bus leaving San Francisco at 4:00 a.m.
