No AC Transit Football Game Service 08/31/2009 |
||||||
|
For more than 30 years, AC Transit has supplemented its regular Line 51 service in Berkeley on Cal Bears football game days to accommodate thousands of additional riders traveling from Rockridge BART, Third and University, and downtown Berkeley to Memorial Stadium. The cost of providing this additional service has been more than $200,000 per season (beyond the fares collected by AC Transit.) In this troubling year of an economic recession, AC Transit has been severely impacted by a projected deficit of $57 million, resulting from cuts in the California state budget and significant reductions in sales and property tax receipts. Consequently, without a full subsidy from UC Berkeley, AC Transit has no alternative but to discontinue its supplemental game day service as part of its overall service reductions and cost-cutting efforts. UC Berkeley has hired a private bus operator to provide service to CAL football games. Details of the private shuttle service on home-game days can be found at http://www.calbearsbus.com/ or at http://www.calbears.com/. AC Transit plans to continue operating its regular Line 51 service along College on home game days.
