The next step in the evolution of the Rapid bus service is BRT - Bus Rapid Transit.
BRT is essentially light rail without the tracks. It combines the speed and capacity of light rail with the convenience and affordability of riding the bus. Vehicles travel in bus-only lanes, avoiding traffic. Passengers walk to comfortable stations, pay their fares in the station, and board through multiple doors like a train.
Service is frequent and fast. Buses can be powered by hybrid electric or clean diesel, and in the future may be powered by zero-emission fuel cells. Like the 1R Rapid, the proposed BRT system would connect Berkeley, Oakland, and San Leandro, but buses would be able to complete the route even more quickly. Construction on the BRT project would begin in 2012.
